The Issues With a Merit Based System in Bill 33
INTRO: The Faculty of Student Services held their first meeting today on September 23rd at TMU. These meetings happen every month to discuss and educate about student services.
The Academic Accommodation Support Hangout just finished at the Daphne Cockwell Complex building.
The Faculty of Student Services held the event to explain the registration process along with a Q&A portion.
Not only did the event serve as an informational session, but it was also a third space for students.
The passing of Bill 33 could decrease the funding that goes towards these community events.
This bill would introduce a merit-based application system for universities.
This could mean Secondary school students with undiagnosed learning disabilities or mental illnesses could face tremendous disadvantages compared to before.
Today I was able to speak to Maham Ali.
She is a third year student here at TMU who receives accommodations.
During high school she was not receiving any accommodations.
She told me if Bill 33 was passed during her time in secondary school, it would have been terribly unfair for her.
OUTRO: I’m Rouaida Nassif reporting for Toronto met.
